About ARI

Avicenna Research Institute (ARI) started the path of evolution and development after the formation of a small research center in Academic Center for Education, Culture and Research (ACECR) in 1998. In July 1999, this research center was approved by the Council for the Development of Medical Universities of the Ministry of Health and Medical Education as a Reproductive Biotechnology Research Center. From the beginning, the activities of this institute have been focused on various aspects of fertility, such as immunology, genetics, infections and reproductive glands, and the ethical and legal aspects of fertility. From the first years of its establishment, efforts were made to encourage specialists and experts in various fields by conducting interdisciplinary seminars.

Numerous successful studies by the Reproductive Immunology Research Group on topics such as the immune system's response to sperm and developing embryos, antibodies, and recurrent miscarriages led to the formation of the Monoclonal Antibody Research Center, and the permission was issued by Council for the Development of Medical Universities in 2000. In 2005, due to the importance of nanotechnology and nanobiotechnology in scientific and research policy of the country, Avicenna Research Center proposed the establishment of a nanobiotechnology research center to the Ministry of Health and Medical Education, which was also approved by the Council for the Development of Medical Universities.

With the successful expansion of research in various fields of reproductive sciences and technologies, the officials of Avicenna Research Center in 2003 came to the conclusion that the time has come to realize the main ambitions, namely the application of research achievements for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Hence, Avicenna Fertility Center was established thereafter. The center started its activities with the support of research and innovations of the research institute and in the form of four clinics, of which the recurrent miscarriage clinic was the first specialized clinic in this field in the country. The provision of replacement therapies, such as embryo donation and surrogacy, also made Avicenna Fertility Center one of the leading and principal centers nationwide. Gradually, other specialized clinics, such as perinatology and pelvic pain, endometriosis and advanced laparoscopy clinic were established in this center, which culminated in more efficient throughput and was the chief privilege for the reputation of the center. As of today, with 8 clinics, Avicenna Fertility Center provides diagnostic services, including cytology and genetics tests, sonography and radiography, as well as all fertility-related counseling, such as nutrition, psychiatry, genetics and sexual health consultation. Currently, we have the pleasure of being among top infertility treatment centers in the country and many national and international patients across the country and from overseas are welcomed.

The activities of Avicenna Research Institute are more dynamic and diverse today than in the past, and in recent years have had significant achievements in cutting edge fields, such as stem cells and animal biotechnology. This research institute has always been obsessed with ethical, legal and jurisprudential aspects of research and treatment, and for this reason, the Biolaw and Ethics Research Group of ARI was formed in 2008 to study the compatibility of new sciences and technologies with the existing legal, ethical and jurisprudential system and work out ethical challenges and consequences of the development of life sciences and technologies. The research, seminars, books, and articles of this research group have always been seminal and effective and have attracted many researchers and students to research in law and bioethics. Also, Avicenna Health-Tec Incubator has started its activities since 2010 with the technical, scientific and financial support of Avicenna Research Institute. The purpose of establishing this incubator is to develop new professions and support entrepreneurs who try to run start-ups and knowledge-based companies in the specialized fields of reproductive biotechnology, monoclonal antibodies, and nanotechnology. Departments located in the incubator can use the equipment and services of ARI and Avicenna Fertility Center.
